HIGHLANDS RANCH, Colo. -- Homeowners in Highlands Ranch want answers after criminals vandalized more than a dozen vehicles overnight.

Now, there's a new concern among homeowners: Deputies say the thieves may have been looking for garage door openers so they can get into those homes.

Scott Taylor watched glass being vacuumed from his daughter's car after a night of vandalism in highlands ranch,

"Just yesterday made the last payment on it," he said.

Taylor has lived in his home for 20 years with no problems. When he heard his dog barking in the middle of the night, he knew something was wrong.

"And all the sudden something like this happens. There's a cop at your door at 2:30 in the morning... it's very -- it just kind of throws you," said Taylor.

Seventeen vehicles were targeted during the late night crime spree. Many, like his daughter's Hyundai, had windows shattered by rocks

"That's it. The rock put a nice hole in the back window," he said.

Taylor says it may have been just a teenage prank.

"That's what the police said last night, it was probably teenagers going out and doing stupid things for a night," he said.

Or it may have been something more. The Douglas County Sheriff's Office has received reports of garage door openers being stolen from cars in the same area.

Deputies are still looking into what may have been taken Tuesday morning, but the idea of unknown suspects with access to homes isn't sitting well with neighbors like Taylor.

"There's enough stuff going on in the world today. Why in the world would you think that's cool?" he said.

The sheriff's office says you should never leave any valuables in your car — and that includes your garage door opener.

Deputies also say random vandalism can't be prevented, but you can lessen your chances of being a target by parking in a well lit area, or a garage, if possible.
