GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. (AP) — Prosecutors have decided not to file charges in the shooting death of a Colorado Mesa University football player.

The Grand Junction Daily Sentinel reports that after months of investigation, Mesa County District Attorney Dan Rubinstein said he would not currently be able to prove charges in the Sept. 22 death of 21-year-old Brett Ojiyi.

Investigators say one of the nine people at the Grand Junction home at the time of the shooting told them the gun accidentally discharged when Ojiyi tried to hand it to him. In a letter released Thursday, Rubinstein says there was no argument, fight, disagreement or other motive for anyone to have intentionally or knowingly shot Ojiyi.

Ojiyi was a running back from Los Angeles who had been a four-year member of the university's football team.
