DENVER (AP) — A Denver jury has convicted a man of attacking a police officer as she tried to get him off the streetwhere he was wandering and washing his clothes in a storm drain.

The Denver Post reports Stephen Hamper was found guilty Wednesday of first-degree assault, criminal attempt to disarm a police officer and other charges. He is scheduled to be sentenced June 2.

Investigators say Hamper hit and jumped on the officer as she was trying to handcuff him. He then tried to grab her gun.

People passing by saw the attack and helped the officer subdue him.

According to a police report, Hamper told officers, "If I would have gotten her gun, I would have killed her. You guys kill children and old ladies."
