WELD COUNTY, Colo. – Investigators are asking for the public’s help in tracking down any people who may have witnessed the crash that killed Colorado State Patrol Corporal Daniel Groves along I-76 near Roggen late Wednesday morning in the midst of a blizzard.

CSP said Thursday that some witnesses they spoke with saw a woman at the scene who gave aid to Trooper Groves, who was hit by a vehicle as he was helping out with another crash amid blizzard conditions that were slamming Weld County shortly after 11 a.m. Wednesday.

Groves, 52, was struck by 58-year-old John Carpenter, of Centennial, who was driving a vehicle and lost control. The 12-year CSP veteran was taken to Platte Valley Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead.

CSP said Wednesday that Carpenter could face charges for driving too fast for the conditions at the time but he had not been charged as of Thursday. He was hospitalized with moderate injuries.

CSP says that in addition to the woman who may have rendered aid to Groves, they are looking for any other people who witnessed the crash or its aftermath. Anyone with information is asked to call CSP Investigator Jon Smith at 303-239-4501 and reference Case No. 3A190433.

CSP Chief Colonel Matthew Packard is expected to host a news conference about the crash on Friday afternoon at 1 p.m.

Gov. Jared Polis ordered flags to half-staff on Wednesday, and Groves was honored by lawmakers at the state Capitol Thursday with speeches and a moment of silence.
