WELD COUNTY, Colo. – Two people are dead following a head-on crash on Highway 85 near the Colorado-Wyoming border, the Colorado State Patrol said Saturday night.

Highway 85 was shut down near Weld County Road 126 about seven miles south of the Wyoming border for part of the night after a wrong-way vehicle crashed with the other, causing at least one of the cars to catch fire.

Investigators said a man was driving a 2004 Chrysler Sebring northbound on the southbound lanes of US 85 and collided head-on with a man driving southbound in a 2000 Mazda pickup.

Both drivers were killed at the scene, according to the CSP spokesperson.

Investigators do not know why one of the drivers was going the wrong way. The investigation is ongoing.

The initial call of the crash came in at around 9:15 p.m., the spokesperson said.
