GREELEY, Colo. – A man convicted in January of child abuse resulting in the death of his 3-month-old daughter in January 2016 was sentenced Monday to 22 years in prison.
Edward Berdan, 33, of Evans was convicted in late January – on the third anniversary of his daughter’s death – of causing her 10 broken ribs, a brain hemorrhage and other damage while he was caring for her while his wife was at work.
When Berdan’s wife got home, she found their daughter unresponsive and took her to Medical Center of the Rockies. The girl, named Alexis, was transferred to Children’s Hospital Colorado and died after eight days in the hospital.
“Alexis Berdan was one of the most vulnerable members of our society – she was three months old when she was killed by her biological father,” Weld Deputy District Attorney Arynn Clark said in a statement. “She suffered a tremendous cost involving betrayal, pain and death. Edward Berdan deserves no discount; the price must be paid in full.”
According to prosecutors, Berdan faced between 16 and 48 years in prison.
