GREELEY, Colo. – A Weld County jury convicted an Evans man Monday night of child abuse resulting in the death of his three-month-old daughter in January 2016 – on what was the third anniversary of the girl’s death.

Edward Berdan, 33, was convicted of one count of child abuse resulting in death after the jury deliberated for almost eight hours.

Berdan’s daughter, Alexis, died after eight days at Children’s Hospital Colorado on Jan. 28, 2016. Berdan had been caring for her on Jan. 20 of that year, but when his wife returned from work, she found their daughter unresponsive, prosecutors said.

After the girl was hospitalized, doctors found she had 10 broken ribs, a brain hemorrhage and further damage, and retinal hemorrhages. She died eight days later.

“The child suffered I life, but on the three year anniversary of her death – justice was served,” 19th Judicial Deputy District Attorney Arynn Clark said in a statement.

Berdan is scheduled to be sentenced on March 25 and faces between 16 and 48 years in prison.
