Denver Police Department warns of scam with a twist

Posted

DENVER – The Denver Police Department is warning residents in the metro area to be aware of a new scam “with a twist” that’s going around.

Police said on Facebook that a DPD officer responded to a report of possible harassment in the area of South Sheridan Boulevard and West Quincy Avenue on Sunday, Oct. 29.

The victim told police that a couple of days earlier, she got a phone call from a man who identified himself as Detective Phillips and claimed to be a member of the Denver Sheriff’s Department.

The man told the victim she had missed her jury summons and now had a warrant out for her arrest. He instructed her to go to a grocery store and purchase gift cards to pay for the bond and to avoid being arrested for the warrant.

The woman knew then this was a scam and hung up on the suspect, but he continued to text the victim, eventually sending her a photo of his genitalia.

The Police Department said to its followers that people “can’t buy their way out of a warrant,” and that they would never call you to give you a heads up if you’re wanted.

If you receive a call of this sort, you are asked to call DPD to report it at (720) 913-2000.
