DENVER — One of two suspects charged with federal drug trafficking crimes is a Denver sheriff’s deputy, according to a release Wednesday from the Department of Justice.

Deputy Sylvia Montoya, 46, and Timothy Spikes, 36, both from Denver, were charged Tuesday with drug trafficking crimes for allegedly selling crack cocaine, methamphetamine, and heroin from a Lakewood apartment unit.

Federal prosecutors said Montoya and Spikes maintained the Lakewood apartment, located at 3966 South Wadsworth Blvd. Apartment 201, to distribute drugs.

In addition, Spikes was also charged with possessing a firearm in furtherance of a drug trafficking crime and having been previously convicted of a felony.

At Tuesday’s detention hearing, Spikes was ordered held in custody without bond while Montoya was released on bond.

If convicted, both defendants face not less than 10 years and not more than life in federal prison for some of the charges. Other charges carry a penalty of not more than 20 years in prison.
