Jefferson County standoff ends with suspect dead in home

CONIFER, Colo. – An hours-long standoff in Jefferson County ended Tuesday afternoon when a body believed to be that of the suspect was found inside a home in Conifer.

Neighbors were told to seek shelter as deputies with the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office responded to the home Monday evening.

Deputies say a disturbance between a 37-year-old man and his parents at a home in the 12000 block of South Highway 285 escalated to a hostage situation just after 6:30 p.m.

Deputies said the man’s 76-year-old father was able to get out of the house and call police to alert them of what was going on. The man’s 69-year-old mother, who had been in contact with police throughout the standoff, was able to get out of the house shortly before midnight.

A SWAT team was on scene just before 10 p.m. to try to peacefully resolve the situation, and a Code Red was issued for residents in the neighboring areas, according to deputies.

By 1 p.m. Tuesday, deputies said a body believed to be the suspect's was found inside the home and the coroner was working to determine the man's identity and cause of death.
