AURORA, Colo. — Officers with the Aurora Police Department shot and injured a man who they say began firing at them during a domestic violence incident Tuesday. No officers were injured.

The shooting happened in the 2300 block of Xanadu Way, APD tweeted around 1 p.m.

Officers were called to a residence in the area around 12:30 p.m. on a report of a domestic violence incident. Police said officers received reports that shots were fired as they responded to the address.

When police arrived, officers confronted a man armed with a gun. They attempted to deescalate the situation and gave numerous orders for the man to drop the gun, according to Aurora police. But the suspect shot his weapon during those commands and officers returned fire, striking the suspect, police said.

The suspect was transported to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries. No other injuries were reported.

Aurora police said two officers fired their weapon during the exchange of gunfire. Those officers, veteran employees of the force with a combined 30 years of service, were placed on administrative leave, per protocol, Aurora police told Denver7.

The 18th Judicial District Critical Incident Response Team is investigating the incident. Body-worn cameras are being reviewed.
