DENVER -- The Easter Sunrise Service at Red Rocks Amphitheater is a tradition for many Colorado families, but that tradition might look a little different this year. The 73rd annual service went virtual due to ongoing concerns about COVID-19.
Instead of packing the seats at Red Rocks, families can watch the pre-recorded service online, and yes, it includes images of a beautiful sunrise.
"We hope to simulate the feeling of being in that space and even though we're physically separate to be spiritually connected on that morning and to worship and also to get a message of hope in these very unsettling times," said Adrian Miller, Executive Director for the Colorado Council of Churches.
Miller said he realized early on that it would not be safe to hold a gathering that can attract upwards of 11,000 people. When it was looking like they would have to cancel, he called faith leaders from 13 different denominations, and they decided to move the service online.
"So I see this as an invitation from God not only for a chance to connect and be spiritually connected but as an opportunity to think about what will be on the other side of this and what kind of future can we build," said Miller.
The virtual Easter Sunrise Service was posted to YouTube early Sunday morning, and Miller says the beauty of it is that people from all over the country and across the globe will now have an opportunity to watch.
