2:39 p.m. | Gov. Polis ends Colorado’s pandemic state of emergency

Governor Jared Polis ended the state’s pandemic state of emergency Thursday, more than 15 months after the arrival of the novel coronavirus to our state.

“Today I am ending the health emergency declaration in Colorado,” Polis said in a video announcement posted to the governor’s Twitter account. “That means getting Coloradans back to work sooner and allowing our state to recover faster by ending the health emergency, and focusing on recovery and vaccinations.”

Though Polis acknowledged “COVID-19 still here and will likely always be a part of our lives,” he said hospital capacity is no longer in jeopardy in our state and added the COVID-19 vaccine is widely available to those who want to get the shot.

To date, 70.32% of adult Coloradans have received at least one dose of the three currently available vaccines in the United States, according to a spokesperson with the governor’s office. Nearly 53% of all Coloradans are fully vaccinated.

Along with ending the state’s emergency health order Thursday, Polis also rescinded all previous executive orders issued due to the COVID-19 pandemic and signed a Recovery Executive Order that would focus the state’s efforts on economic recovery.

Polis advised Coloradans to remain vigilant against COVID-19 variants, and said the state is managing the response with local public health officials. Currently, about 71% of all cases of the coronavirus in the state can be attributed to the delta variant, a more virulent strain of the new virus which was first identified in India back in December of last year.

In his remarks, Polis continued to urge people who had not yet been vaccinated to get the vaccine, citing a statement from Dr. Fauci who reported last week that 99% of deaths from COVID-19 in June were among the unvaccinated.

12:09 p.m. | Statewide modeling report shows hospitalizations continue to decline, areas with higher vaccination rates have fewer cases

The Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment (CDPHE) and the Colorado School of Public Health released the most recent statewide modeling report showing the state’s SARS-CoV-2 epidemic is declining.

The report shows the effective reproduction number for the novel coronavirus statewide is below one at 0.77, indicating that infections are still occurring but at a decreasing transmission rate. Currently, 1 in 390 Coloradans are estimated to be infected.

There are large differences in estimated immunity and in vaccination uptake across the state, the report shows, with regions of the state with higher vaccination rates showing fewer COVID-19 cases, hospitalizations, and deaths.

"The modeling team anticipates that regions of Colorado with low vaccination rates at present will be areas of concern in the months ahead," the report states, adding the team estimates that approximately 90% of cases in Colorado could be due to the highly infectious variant strain, which "poses the greatest risk to unvaccinated Coloradans."

The team also estimates 52% of the total population of Colorado is immune to the virus.

9:54 p.m. | Colorado to receive federal funding for COVID-19 testing in schools

Colorado will receive more than $173 million from the federal government for a school COVID-19 testing program, according to the Colorado Department of Health and Environment.

CDPHE said the state plans to provide testing supplies and contract staff who can help administer the testing program and report the results. Frequent testing opportunities to all interested Colorado schools will “help slow disease transmission, particularly among students too young to be vaccinated.”

This testing is in addition to the state’s PCR testing vendors, who have testing sites across the state.

CDPHE is in the process of developing updated school COVID-19 guidance with the help of the CDC, school districts, educators and education leaders from across the state.

“Our goal is to ensure testing is readily available to all students and educators to help ensure students can safely return to school in-person with minimal disruption,” CDPHE said in a statement. “Testing will be a critical component of our COVID-19 response in the fall, particularly with the spread of the Delta variant.”

Colorado Gov. Jared Polis announced the last winner of the state’s COVID-19 Comeback Cash program on Wednesday.Heidi Russell, a mother of four, won the last $1 million drawing for getting at least one dose of three currently available vaccines in the U.S.

The woman moved to Colorado seven years ago and said she was able to get the vaccine in February.

“This prize will be so helpful in raising four kids,” said Russell. “When I told my daughter this yesterday, she said, ‘Yes, my college is paid for,’” she said during Wednesday’s news conference.

Polis also announced the last round of scholarship recipients for youths who’ve received at least one dose of the vaccine.

During the news conference, Polis said 42.8% of 12-15 year olds had received at least one dose of the vaccine as of Wednesday, and said the next goal for the state after it had met President Joe Biden’s goal to vaccinate 70% of adults with at least one dose of the vaccine before July 4 was to put more focus on vaccinating kids as young as 12.

“It will be a lot harder to get from 70(%) to 80 than it was to get from 0 to 70… but now is the time for Colorado to end the pandemic,” Polis said in his remarks.

So far, 200,000 young Coloradans have received at least one dose of the vaccine, according to an official present at the news conference.
