3:17 p.m. | Colorado’s COVID hospitalizations down slightly for first time in a month

Colorado’s COVID-19 hospitalizations this week dropped marginally for the first time in a month, but it’s too early to say if the state’s situation is improving.

The Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment reported 304 people were hospitalized with the virus statewide as of Tuesday afternoon, down from 324 a week earlier.

But that number has bounced between 300 and 325 since mid-June, so it’s not clear if that’s a meaningful difference, said Dr. Jon Samet, dean of the Colorado School of Public Health.

Cases were down slightly, with 12,440 reported in the week ending Sunday — 557 fewer than the previous week. The percentage of tests coming back positive was also lower, though at 11.2%, it’s still high enough to suggest significant numbers of cases aren’t being found.

The Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment (CDPHE) has launched its COVID-19 Health Equity and Immunization Fund aimed at "reaching people where they work and live with COVID-19 resources, information and support."

The program is designed to expand COVID prevention resources and services, increase COVID-19 vaccination, ensure equitable distribution and administration of COVID-19 vaccines, and increase community engagement and COVID-19 vaccination capacity across the state, including among high-risk and underserved populations through grants, according to the CDPHE.

“We are thrilled to announce these funding opportunities and are looking forward to applicant submissions,” said Health Equity Branch Chief Brandy Emily. “We have a sincere commitment to ensuring everyone, regardless of where they live or who they are, has an opportunity to reach their full health potential. We believe this grant will drive innovation, support proven organizations with established trust in the community, and help us meet people where they live.”

The application period for COVID-19 Health Equity and Immunization Funding Opportunity RFA #40624 will open August 1, 2022. There are four program areas to support these funding goals. Program areas include:

  1. Community Engagement Program will fund projects/activities that use authentic community engagement practices to gather community input on population-specific resources and needs related to health equity and the COVID-19 pandemic.
  2. Community Health Navigators Program will provide support for community health navigators to do vaccine outreach, patient education, and health system navigation.
  3. Healthy Communities Program will fund activities focused on community resilience related to the social determinants of health as they relate to COVID-19's impact on communities.
  4. Health Equity Immunization Events Program is to improve vaccine education, outreach, access, and administration of COVID-19 vaccine in communities.
