7:34 p.m. | Two more cases of more contagious COVID-19 variant confirmed in Colorado, state health officials say
Two more cases of a more contagious variant of the novel coronavirus have been confirmed in Colorado, state health officials said Thursday.
Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment (CDPHE) officials said the new case and a second possible case were found among staff members at the Veterans Community Living Center at Fitzsimons operated by the Colorado Department of Human Services.
A possible case from Dec. 29 was changed to confirmed on Wednesday. In all, Colorado now has three confirmed cases of the new SARS-CoV-2 variant, B.1.1.7.
The new variant of SARS-CoV-2 is believed to be more contagious than previously identified strains of the new virus but doesn’t appear to cause more severe symptoms. Additionally, health officials said, currently approved vaccines for COVID-19 vaccine are thought to be effective against the new variant.
However, there is concern that if it's more transmissible, it could lead to more hospitalizations, more filled ICU beds, and the potential to overwhelm the health care systems, according to Dr. Eric France, the chief medical officer of the CDPHE.

Primavera said UCHealth University of Colorado Hospital saved her when she was diagnosed with cancer around 30 years ago and it's only fitting they're saving her life now.
“I have made it my life’s work to overcome adversity -- no matter how seemingly insurmountable, and help others do the same. As the Lt. Governor, the Director of the Office of Saving People Money, a mother, and a grandmother, my greatest hope for receiving the COVID-19 vaccine today is to encourage my fellow Coloradans over 70 to do the same as soon as they are able,” said Lt. Governor Primavera. “In this moment, let’s remember where we have come from in the last 10 months, the fortitude we have shown, and use this to motivate us toward a future when grandparents can once again freely and safely embrace their grandchildren.”

7:31 a.m. | Colorado unemployment numbers
The Colorado Department of Labor and Employment reported that 41,439 regular initial unemployment claims were filed during the week ending Jan. 2, 2021. The department attributes the increase of regular UI claims to a number of factors including quarter change, seasonal filings and claim reopens but the majority are likely fraud due to abnormalities in the data, according to thee CDLE.
The increase in reports of UI fraud is likely connected to the CARES Act programs expiring. These reports of UI fraud have increased proportionately with the increase in regular UI claims.
The CDLE said no Pandemic Unemployment Assistance (PUA) initial claims were filed the week ending Jan. 2 due to the expiration of the CARES Act.
Since mid-March, 773,558 regular initial unemployment claims have been filed. A grand total of 1,025,482 claims, including federal PUA benefits, were filed.

2:19 p.m. | Colorado adds new data to COVID-19 vaccination dashboard
The state of Colorado is adding new information to its COVID-19 vaccination dashboard that will include the total count of vaccine providers that have administered COVID-19 vaccine and how many people have been immunized, per data reported to the Colorado Immunization Information System (CIIS).
Starting Tuesday, Coloradans will now be able to see how many vaccines have been administered by vaccine type-- as well as by daily, weekly, and cumulative administration counts, state health officials said in a news release.
“While we expect the distribution to last for several months, we plan to be as transparent as possible with the public about where we are in the process," said Scott Bookman, incident commander, COVID-19 response. "Eventually, everyone who wants a vaccine will be able to get a vaccine-- and that’s truly an exciting thing.”
Not included in the new data? How many new doses of the COVID-19 vaccines are arriving each week, which could show discrepancies between what is available for the public and what has been administered thus far.
We asked the state about this and they responded that, to date, Colorado has received 242,192 doses of the COVID-19 vaccine, but only 120,510 have been distributed (according to the COVID-19 vaccine dashboard) - which comes to less than half of the total number of vaccines which have been received.

6 p.m. | If you are next in line for a COVID vaccine, be prepared to wait
Many hospitals are not yet distributing vaccines to those 70 and over nearly a week after the governor announced the age group was eligible.
HealthOne hospitals tweeted “Due to limited inventory, the vaccine is NOT currently available for members of the community.”
Many hospitals are still trying to vaccinate health care workers.
Denver Health says it hopes to start reaching out to those 70 and older this week.
Centura Health and UCHealth tell us they will contact patients through their online system.
“We are running vaccination clinics and we are communicating to our patients electronically, sending invitations in a random fashion. We set up both appointments at the same time the first and the second dose,” said Dr. Richard Zane, the Chief of Emergency Medicine at UCHealth.
The Colorado Hospital Association says while some hospitals with smaller populations got through Phase 1A quickly, others will take more time. Summit County is already administering the vaccine to those 70 and older through drive-up sites.
Stay up to date by checking your hospital and doctor's website to learn more about their vaccination plan. They are being inundated with calls, so be patient.
“We are now building that interface for patients not connected through UCHealth. Hopefully, this week or next, there will be access through our website to be able to sign up for vaccination,” Dr. Zane said.
The Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment says mass vaccination clinics are in the works in several counties. Until then, hospitals will be reaching out to individual patients.
The same goes for health care workers.
Many nurses, respiratory therapists, and even doctors have reached out to Denver7 asking when they will get their vaccine.
CDPHE says they hope to get to all Phase 1A health care workers by Jan. 15.

Following Polis' request, Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment (CDPHE) Executive Director Jill Hunsaker Ryan said the department planned to work with local public health agencies on next steps after data showed counties restricted in Level Red had reduced viral transmission "to a point where we can provide economic relief and move them into Level Orange."
