12:41 p.m. | Denver is now offering free COVID-19 at-home tests at most of its recreation centers

If you’re looking for a rapid at-home COVID-19 test but don’t want to wait for it to arrive by mail, you can now pick some up at most Denver rec centers starting Thursday.

The Denver Department of Public Health and Environment (DDPHE) said the free tests will be available across the city’s 29 recreation centers, except for La Alma, beginning Feb. 24 as part of the state’s efforts to make COVID-19 testing more accessible to Coloradans.

DDPHE officials said in a news release the city’s Parks and Recreation division had received 15,000 kits — each containing two tests — for distribution across Denver rec centers.

Only two test kits will be distributed per person while supplies last, officials said in a news release. The free tests are iHealth Labs over-the-counter COVID-19 Antigen rapid tests and take 15 minutes to provide a result.

People wanting to obtain free COVID-19 tests from the state via mail can still do so by clicking here.

State and local health officials continue to stress that all Coloradans ages 5 and older should still get vaccinated with the COVID-19 vaccine to avoid the worst outcomes of the disease.

10:39 a.m. | Denver to lift vaccine mandate for city workers, teachers and others in high-risk settings on March 5

City of Denver employees, teachers, contractors and workers in high-risk settings will no longer be required to be vaccinated against the novel coronavirus starting March 5, according to the latest guidance from the Denver Department of Public Health and Environment (DDPHE).

The vaccine mandate, which was announced for all city and county of Denver employees, first responders, workers at long-term care centers, shelters, correctional facilities, as well as childcare providers, teachers and some private workers on Aug. 2, has been in place since Sept. 30 of last year. It was put in place to increase the vaccination rate across the city and county and to protect the region’s hospital system from collapsing during the delta and omicron waves, city officials said.

By the beginning of October, nearly 99% of the city’s workforce had been fully vaccinated or exempt, according to city data at the time.

The latest data from the DDPHE shows the one-week positivity rate – the metric which measures how much of the virus is currently spreading throughout the community – has dropped below 5% in Denver and modeling suggests lifting the vaccine mandate will not have a negative effect on this trend, a news release from the department states.

Across Colorado, state health officials estimate 90% of residents are immune to omicron and most are protected against severe disease.

Even though immunity due to vaccination or recent infection is high, DDPHE officials continue to urge Denverites to be mindful and take precautions, noting the department may implement new public health orders in the future if data shows it will protect community health.

Federal and state vaccination mandates remain in effect for workers and people in certain settings, including medical facilities. A federal mask mandate also remains in effect for the nation’s airports, during flights, in school buses, public transportation and other settings.

Denver's vaccine mandate led to seven Denver police officers filing a lawsuit against the mayor, police chief and health department, however, a judge ultimately dismissed the suit.

1:36 p.m. | CDPHE to add free rapid at-home tests to community sites

The Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment (CDPHE) said Tuesday it has expanded its free rapid at-home testing program to community sites.

"The program will leverage many of the 437 community partners that have helped the state distribute more than 4.1 million masks and includes hundreds of libraries, fire stations, and other community sites across the state," a CDPHE spokesperson said in a news release.

A list of all locations that will offer free rapid at-home tests can be found here.

“Testing is an important tool for slowing disease transmission and we are grateful to our community partners who are helping us increase access to free rapid COVID-19 tests,” said Scott Bookman, COVID-19 Incident Commander. “By utilizing community partners to distribute tests like they did with the free mask program, we are able to add to the 2 million free Rapid-At-Home tests we have already distributed to Coloradans and further increase access to rapid testing.”

The tests being distributed as part of this newest program are iHealth Labs over-the-counter COVID-19 Antigen rapid tests, according to the state. They take 15 minutes to provide a result and instructions are included on the box in English and available online in Spanish. Once a test result is available, an individual should review these instructions on how to interpret and report the results.

State health officials stress that all Coloradans ages 5 and older should still get vaccinated with the COVID-19 vaccine.
