2:30 p.m. | COVID-19 cases, hospitalizations continue trending downward in Colorado; Kids 5-11 across the state have higher vaccination rate than all of US
Colorado continues to see a downward trend in cases and hospitalizations of COVID-19 following the surge from the fifth wave of the pandemic over the summer, Dr. Rachel Herlihy, the state epidemiologist, said Thursday.
During a virtual news conference, state health officials provided the latest updates on the coronavirus pandemic in Colorado. On Thursday, the CDPHE's COVID-19 Incident Commander, Scott Bookman, said 1,356 people were still hospitalized with confirmed cases of COVID-19, though only 518 hospital beds were currently available as of 2:30 p.m.
"While the overall trend is positive, I do want to stress that we still have a lot of people in hospitals in Colorado," Bookman warned. He once again urged Coloradans to get vaccinated, especially if you're planning on visiting family for the Christmas holidays.
Now that kids 5-11 are able to get vaccinated, Bookman suggested planning the holidays around vulnerable groups of people by either testing for COVID-19 beforehand, hosting smaller gatherings, having said gatherings in well-ventilated spaces and getting everyone's contact information in case contact tracing needs to occur.
Bookman said the vaccination rate for this particular age group is higher across the state than it is when compared to the rest of the country. In Colorado, 115,557 kids aged 5-11 have received at least 1 dose of Pfizer COVID-19 vaccine, which translates to about 24.1%. Across the U.S., only 17.6% of kids aged 5-11 have been incoluated, according to CDPHE data.
More than 1.1 million people in Colorado have received a booster shot, Bookman said, which translates to about 42.9% of all eligible Coloradans.
State health officials also provided the latest information on the omicron variant, which was first detected in South Africa in mid-November. No additional cases have been found in Colorado, Herlihy said.
