FORT COLLINS, Colo. — Relocating from Houston to Fort Collins turned into a nightmare for a local family, when they say the moving company demanded they pay more than double their agreed upon price in order to actually deliver their belongings.

“They basically held my stuff hostage until I paid the amount that I never agreed to pay,” Julie Allen told Contact7.

Allen and her family hired Adam’s Moving and Storage for a “full service move,” agreeing to pay $3,745.13. But when the truck arrived in Fort Collins, she says that story changed.

“He wanted $4,700 more,” she said, describing the truck driver. “He said he would not let any of our stuff off the truck until we paid that amount.”

The truck had all of their possessions on it, so the family ultimately paid. Then they found out what condition their belongings were delivered in.

“They broke my $2,000 treadmill, my desk that was almost $300 was in pieces with big holes in it, pieces of my son’s bed were missing, and there’s still some things we have no idea if we’re ever going to see them again,” Allen described.

Contact7 made multiple attempts to reach Adam’s Moving and Storage via email and their customer service line. The company did not respond to those inquiries.

The company has a Lakewood address listed in their profile on the Better Business Bureau, but they are not a registered business with the Colorado Secretary of State’s Office.

When asked if she believes she was scammed, Allen replied “Yes. One hundred percent.”

She is now considering taking legal action against the company that she paid more than double the originally agreed upon amount. She also wants to warn others about what happened to her.

“Thankfully we were able to pay and get our stuff, but I know there are a lot of other people out there that would have to give up their possessions,” she said.
