AURORA, Colo. -- Exposing complaints about a nationwide roofing company was only half the battle. Customers all over the Denver metro have accused Mastercraft Exteriors of taking their money and never doing the job.
While their cases are being investigated by Aurora Police, Contact7 viewers are stepping up and literally putting a roof over their heads – but sometimes things get worse before they get better.
"Well, I hate to say that, but once you get ripped off, you don't trust anyone," said Robert James, with a smile on his face.
For him, a week ago, things were looking really bad. He had a signed contract with Mastercraft Exteriors and signed over a $7,000 insurance check, but then everyone associated with the company disappeared without doing any work.
Aurora Police are investigating at least ten complaints against Mastercraft Exteriors, and in the meantime, local roofers are stepping up to help people who paid and got nothing.
"When I say we’re going to do something, we’re going to do it," said IkeJon Nissen, owner of Berthoud-Based Roof Link, who installed a new roof at no cost this week for James, an Air Force veteran and longtime law enforcement officer. "So he has served our country and the community for many, many years and it makes it even better — it’s even a nicer reward to give something to someone like him who has sacrificed so much, so thank you for that, Robert."
Now, more roofers are reaching out to Contact7 to help others who gave money to Mastercraft Exteriors and never got a roof. Luke Pratte will be getting a new roof at no extra cost from Aurora Colorado roofing next week, and the company has asked other former Mastercraft customers to contact them.
"We just really want to help these people," said owner Kerry Hettick.
Back in Aurora, James said, things are looking much better, just in time for a very special day.
"I'm 80 years old today," he said looking at his new roof with a smile. "I'm very lucky. I have been really blessed — this is the biggest blessing I have ever had."
