ARAPAHOE COUNTY, Colo. -- The owner of Mastercraft Exteriors, a roofing company accused of ripping off people all over the Denver metro, now faces felony charges in Arapahoe County.
Meanwhile, many of his former clients have been getting new roofs at no cost to them from local roofers trying to make things right.
"We had a hail storm last year in May," said Mark Trosch, who said just about everyone had hail damage, but not everyone got taken for nearly $20,000. "They didn't do anything. I didn't even get supplies dropped off, nothing."
Arapahoe County court records show that he is far from alone: A dozen homeowners reported that Mastercraft Exteriors took their money and disappeared.
Contact7 first started investigating the company in January, when Robert James, an Aurora veteran, paid more than $7,000 to Mastercraft Exteriors and never saw them again.
A local roofing company stepped up to help him, but there was no word from the out-of-state owner of Mastercraft Exteriors until now.
A criminal complaint out of Wisconsin shows a felony theft charge against Mastercraft Exteriors' owner, Bret Ehret, stating that a business paid him $138,000 for roof repairs that were never finished.
Meanwhile, in Colorado, an arrest affidavit indicates that Aurora Police have been busy building a case against Ehret with 13 felony theft charges and a combined loss of $132,000 from June 2019 through September 2019.
"It's just wrong for somebody to do that to people, take their money like that and get away with it," said Trosch.
While Trosch hopes that eventually justice will be served, he recently got a call from Aurora Colorado Roofing's Michael Larsen.
"So, we saw the Contact7 story about Mastercraft Exteriors," said Larsen. "We were able to help out pretty much everyone we contacted."
The company has helped several homeowners get new roofs at no cost to them.
"Words can't say enough how much I appreciate this," said Trosch, who just wants to make sure no one goes through what he did. "It crushes you, just don't trust anybody after that. Just never sign a check over to a contractor until the job is the bottom line."
