DENVER -- After an outpouring of love and support, the Fischer family is headed back to Wyoming with safe, new car seats for their kids, and a brighter outlook than the one forced into their lives on Saturday.
The van they used to transport their son with Down Syndrome was stolen from a hotel in North Denver on Friday night. He required oxygen tanks to travel but most of those tanks were stolen along with the car. The family, from Sheridan, Wyoming, was stranded in the city until they could find a way to get their son back safely.
"It just hit me, and I just started shaking," said Ira Fischer, describing the moment he knew his transportation was gone. "I ran over to the front desk and I said ‘call 911’ my car has been stolen."
But the story gets better from there. After reaching out to Contact7, numerous viewers donated money to help the family get to Wyoming.
Contact7 brought Ira to Target to pick out two new car seats for Lane and his sister, Lyzz, and set him up with several hundred dollars in gift cards for gas and food on the way back.
"Wow is an understatement. I am at a loss," said Ira. "And we appreciate everything and every person that even watched this."
The family still has to worry about a new car and safety devices for their son, but they have a good start and a comfortable ride for their kids. And possibly the best gift of all, a safe ride home.
"I will get to sleep in my bed tonight," said Ira. "And then we will worry about the other stuff later."
