LAKEWOOD, Colo. -- Rylan Robertson, 10, spent more than a month in the hospital after he was severely injured in a bounce house accident earlier this summer.
A family member said a sudden gust of wind lifted up the bounce house while several kids were playing inside, then the inflatable structure slammed into a brick wall.
"When something like this happens it kind of opens your eyes and makes you realize that maybe that’s not the safest," said Dee Ricketts, his great-aunt.
Robertson had emergency surgery on June 6, the day the accident happened. His aunt says he was diagnosed with a traumatic brain injury. His skull was fractured, he had swelling on his brain, seven broken ribs and lacerations on several internal organs.
"I’m pretty sure his medical bills are already over a million dollars so it’s... we’re talking neurologists, specialists, infection specialists, I mean he’s had so many doctors and so many.... the surgeries alone," said Ricketts.
His family is currently raising money to cover some of the ongoing medical bills. They are also pursuing legal action against the company that set up the bounce house. Robertson will likely need another surgery within the next few months.
