COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. -- A woman being held hostage in her own home was shot and killed early Wednesday morning.

It happened on Harrington Drive, near Bradley Road and Grinnell Blvd., in Colorado Springs.

The woman was initially hospitalized, but the El Paso County Sheriff's Office said at 11:25 a.m. that the woman had succumbed to her injuries.

Deputies said they took Gregory Lorbiecki into custody.

KRDO-TV reported that the man in the house was holding his wife hostage and that deputies said they have been called out to the house before on domestic violence reports.

According to Colorado court records, Lorbiecki was arrested by El Paso County deputies in March of this year on property damage and criminal mischief charges relating to a domestic violence incident.

Records show a protection order against Lorbiecki was granted on March 14 -- three days after the arrest -- but the order was vacated when charges were dismissed in May.

Two children escaped the home safely earlier in the morning, according to KRDO-TV.
