Consumer Reports tested 170 tire models from 30 brands to create its annual list of the top tire makers.

"The best tires shine for all-weather grip, braking distances, rolling resistance, and tread life,” said Gene Petersen, Consumer Reports tire program manager. “By choosing a top-rated tire, drivers can often enhance the performance and safety of their car.”

The best tire brands in 2019 were Michelin, Continental and General.

Consumer Reports said most models of Michelin tires offer a good blend of grip, handling, and long wear.

Consumer Reports said General is a second-tier brand for Continental that sells tires at a lower price, but there is no skimping on performance.
