DENVER - When it comes to renting, the amount of space one can get for their money varies widely by location and a new report lists Denver among cities with the smallest bang for the buck.
Rental listing site ApartmentList tabulated the average price per square foot of its listings over the past six months to find out how big of an apartment a renter could get for $1,500 in cities across the country.
In Denver, the average rent per square foot was $1.78 during that time, meaning a renter can get about 840 square feet for $1,500. That's less space than a renter could expect to find in other major cities like Houston (1,220 sq. ft.), Philadelphia (1,030 sq. ft.) and Chicago (890 sq. ft.).
Statewide, rentals in Colorado run about $1.41 per square foot, according to ApartmentList, making for an average of 1,070 square feet for $1,500 per month.
Denver is among the most expensive cities in Colorado but of the cities that ApartmentList looked at, Aspen was by far the most expensive. Its average of $5.17 per square foot means a renter could expect to get less than 300 square feet of space for $1,500 a month.
