DENVER - A New York developer is moving ahead with plans to build an ambitious condo tower in downtown Denver that would become the city's tallest, if approved.

Greenwich Realty Capital first unveiled plans for the project at 17th and California streets last September. At the time, a spokesman said the building would be in excess of 75 stories but it wasn't yet clear what the actual height would be.

For reference, Republic Plaza, Denver's current tallest building, is 56 stories tall.

Plans for 650 17th St. became a little bit more concrete last week when the developer filed a concept with the city that calls for an 81-story mixed-use tower. A city spokeswoman said the concept was filed sometime around Feb. 14.

In September, the developer said the building would house about 250 condos, a hotel, ground-floor retail and hundreds of parking spaces.

Denver planning officials have yet to review any aspects of the project, spokeswoman Andrea Burns told Denver7. The concept that was submitted last week is just the first step in a lengthy process in which the city will review the proposed building and provide feedback about city codes that need to be met before the developer submits a formal site plan.

The city wouldn't be able to provide any further information about the project until Tuesday at the earliest, since city offices are closed for the President's Day holiday, Burns said.

Denver7 has reached out to the developer and the architecture firm working on the project but we have not yet heard back.
