PUEBLO, Colo. -- Pueblo teachers plan to walk out of school Monday, starting the first teacher strike in Colorado in a quarter century.
Starting Monday, teachers will picket several schools with the hope of getting Pueblo School District 60 to agree to a 2 percent pay raise and better benefits.
“We hope this won’t last more than three to five days,” said Pueblo Education Association president Suzanne Ethredge.
The strike became a reality this week, when the Colorado Department of Labor and Employment declined to intervene in the dispute between the district and teachers, as well as the Pueblo Paraprofessional Education.

Senate bill would have punished teachers with jail time if they went on strike
A bill introduced late last month in the Colorado Senate by two Republicans would have punished public school teachers with fines and possible jail time if they went on strike.
The bill, SB-264, died in committee on April 30.
