DENVER — Susana Cordova has officially been named as the new Denver Public Schools superintendent.

Denver Board of Education members unanimously selected Cordova to lead Colorado’s largest school district on Monday evening. She was already ranked as deputy superintendent and was named a finalist in late November.

Cordova will start her new role in early 2019.

She is a DPS graduate and has spent her professional life serving DPS children and their families as a bilingual secondary teacher, principal of a high-needs elementary school and administrator who supervises 165 district-run schools and an annual budget of more than $130 million.

“Susana Cordova is a nationally recognized education leader who has devoted her professional life to serving the children and families of DPS,” said Board President Anne Rowe. “She is a first-generation college graduate who deeply understands the power of education to change lives.”

Cordova said she is committed to ensuring all students in the school district have caring and knowledgeable adults who will support them.

“Every one of our students has excellence in them, and it’s our job as educators to bring that excellence out,” she said.
