DENVER -- Instructor Melissa Root’s yoga class isn’t like most yoga classes. Melissa leads Adaptive Yoga classes for Denver Parks and Recreation where moves are adapted to everyone’s ability, whether they need to remain seated in chairs or wheelchairs or just don’t have that much flexibility.
“The fitness classes in particular are really designed to help people keep whatever level of fitness they already have and expand upon that level of fitness,” Melissa said.
Asia Lanham has been coming to the classes for years.
“This is a great part of her life because she does this so much,” her father said. “She gets the pleasure of interacting with other people and a lot of physical activity out of it.”
Ben Sandoval is another long-time student.
“I'm doing Yoga. I love to work out,” he said. “It helps me go to sleep.”
Finding a calm, peaceful state of mind is just one of the benefits to this yoga class as long as students stick to it.
“The more you do it, the better you get, the more flexible you are the better you feel.”
Denver Parks & Recreations offers a wide variety of adapted opportunities for people in the community. You can see a full schedule on their website.
